News from Santos and Baixada Santista

Organized by Cinezen Cultural, the event will bring together lectures, cosplayers, a gaming area, an exhibition, musical attractions, board games and free distribution of drawings in Dique da Vila Gilda, home to the largest favela on stilts in Brazil.

Santos has been one of the geekiest cities in Brazil for years, according to a ranking published by Amazon Brasil every May. The e-commerce giant takes data from marketplace sellers in the electronics, home and kitchen, and accessories categories. The list lists municipalities with more than 100,000 residents and estimates the per capita base, output and downloads of digital books. There are geek events and projects available to Santos residents throughout the year. It is a segment that promotes culture, tourism, education, is playful, includes children, youth and adults, men and women. It enchants, includes and grows more and more.

Attending the geek universe, however, requires travel and money. Some events are free, some are not. Even in the free ones, you have to spend money to buy comics, dolls. Not everyone can participate. Dique da Vila Gilda, for example, is the region with the lowest Human Development Index (HDI) in Baixada Santista. More than 26,000 people live on stilts, on the banks of the Rio Bugra River, in the largest favela on stilts in Brazil.

With the goal of providing an experience of the geek world to those who do not have the opportunity to attend other events, PalafitaCon took place on August 17, 2019.

The convention, conceived by the cultural producer André Azenha from CineZen Cultural (Santos Film Fest), is holding its second edition on October 22, Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the premises of the Plínio Marcos School of Arts and Culture, at the Instituto Art on the Dike . And now it’s called Community of Nerds: PalafitaCon. “In the medium or long term, we intend to start holding this geek event in other regions in situations of social vulnerability, taking it to the hills, residential buildings, the mainland and, who knows, other cities,” emphasizes Azenha.

“In 2018, we had an insight into the importance of bringing the world of geeks to Arte no Dique at the launch of Gibiteca at the 3rd Santos Film Fest, when we organized a whole morning of activities with cosplayers, comic book distribution, film screenings, etc. . Hundreds of people participated. We spoke with members of the geek universe from Santos and they were all excited about the opportunity to further democratize access to this segment,” points out Event Production Director Paula Azenha.

Activities

Several activities have been confirmed. The Dym Art studio team will create sketches (characters created on the spot) for free in two sessions: 10:30 am and 4:00 pm. People will be able to search for the design of their favorite character. Denis Dym Freitas is a comic book artist working for the US comics market, with experience at the major publishers in the field, Marvel and DC.

The Contos Lúdicos project will be in charge of RGP tables and board games, suitable for all ages, starting at 10:30 am.

There will be lectures with Claudio Roberto Basílio, from the blog Sobre Quadrinhos, and Sarah Campos, from the website A Sah te Indica, a play space supported by Moove Games, storytelling with Camila Genaro, presentations by Bande Netuno, with a set list based on the classics cinematography and animation, Youtube for a Day workshop, with the Creative Seal team, superhero film sessions, the presence of Marvel, DC, Disney, Star Wars characters, etc., drawing of comics Monica’s gang, exhibition in honor of 20 years of Spider-Man (with Tobey Maguire), 20 years of Harry Potter and 10 years of the Avengers, with drawings by the Dym Art Studio team. 2nd Geek Comunidade Santos: PalafitaCon is carried out by ProAC, the Cultural Action Program of the Department of Culture and Creative Economy of the Government of the State of São Paulo, with the support of Moove Games, Festa Encantada, Cine Roxy, Spiders da Baixada, the official Star Wars fan club of Baixada Santista.
