Connecting a PlayStation 3 (PS3) controller to play on a computer is a desire of many users. Anyone with a PS3 DualShock 3 controller can use it as a joystick on a laptop or PC using a cable or via Bluetooth. The method, while not trivial, is not that complicated, and it’s worth it because you can use one of the best video game controls on your desktop. However, it is worth mentioning that this procedure can bring problems to your Sony controller and should be done very carefully.

Step 1. First, some drivers need to be installed on the system. Use the most popular package called Motion Joy. To download it, just search for the download file online;

Step 2. Go to the location where you placed the above file and extract it. One file will be extracted, and its icon is the DualShock 3 controller;

Step 3. Right click on the extracted file and select “Run as administrator” option. After the installation is complete, the system will ask you if you want to open the DS3 Tool program. Click Yes;

Step 4. When opening the program, notice that there is no controller connected. Connect the DualShock 3 to the computer using the microUSB-USB cable. Then click the “Driver Manager” option in the top menu of the DS3 tool;

Step 5. The next screen informs you that there is hardware connected to the USB port, but the icon indicates that it is not yet functional – a red X in the MotionJoy column. It is possible that the program sometimes takes a while to display the connected controller;

If this happens, try removing and reinserting the controller into the USB port or restarting the DS3 Tool. When the device appears, select it and click “Load Driver”. The “Install All” button also works, it doesn’t require you to choose which device you want to use, as it will install drivers for all connected hardware.

Step 6. The first time it is configured, the Windows security system will ask you if you really want to install the device. Click on “Install”;

Step 7. After installation, the DS3 tool recognizes the controller with the Motion Joy drivers, confirming the success of the operation;

Step 8. Return to the home screen by clicking “Profiles” in the top menu. It now appears that the “Dualshock 3/sixaxis” controller is connected. To test, click on “Vibration test”, which makes your controller vibrate, giving the first signs of life;

Step 9. Select the Xbox 360 controller emulation mode and then click the “Game Controller Pad” button to check if the buttons work;

Step 10. A small window will open showing the status of “MotionJoy Virtual Game Controller” is OK. Click on “Properties”;

Step 11. Press the buttons to see if they are recognized. Each push of the button turns on a “light” to indicate that it is working. The Xbox 360 controller emulation option is to enable the use of analog joysticks. If you want, you can also use the DS3 as a Playstation 1 controller (without analog sticks), just change the joystick mode in the home menu (“Profiles”);

Step 12. : Done! Your controller is now working. To test, open any game that uses an Xbox 360 controller, for example any from Steam, and your DualShock 3 can be used as a controller. It is worth noting that the DS3 Tool program must be open at all times for the control to work.

How to connect a PS3 controller to a computer via Bluetooth

If your computer supports Bluetooth, either natively or with a USB adapter, you can use your DualShock 3 without having to connect it using a microUSB cable. To do this, after performing the steps above, perform the procedure below:

Step 1. Disconnect the DualShock 3 cable and press the PS button for about 15-20 seconds, until the controller lights stop flashing;

Step 2. Again in the DS3 tool, click on “Bluetooth Pair” in the top menu;

Step 4. Reconnect the DualShock 3 and click the “Pair Now” button. This process allows the Bluetooth controller to recognize the device from your computer;

NOTE: If you also use the controller to play games on the Playstation 3, when you want to use it on the console, you need to connect the DualShock 3 to the USB port of the game using a microUSB cable, so that the controller recognizes the Bluetooth PS3 again (that is, to pair both).

Step 5. After pairing, remove the cable and return to the “Profiles” screen. Click on “Vibration Testing”. If the controller vibrates, everything should work, allowing you to play the DualShock 3 without cables;

Step 6. If the controller is turned off and you want to connect directly via Bluetooth, it will no longer be necessary to connect the cable. To do this, on the “BluetoothPair” screen, click on “Pair Now” after pressing the PS button on the DualShock 3. After a few seconds, the lights on the controller stop flashing, leaving only one LED lit, indicating that they are connected.

Ready! You can now play PC games with your DualShock 3. Since it emulates the Xbox 360 controller, widely used in PC games, some games provide on-screen hints using the Microsoft controller’s buttons as an example. This can lead to some conflicts at first, for example realizing that the Xbox 360 controller’s A button is equivalent to the DualShock 3’s square button.
