2. Target was sued for circumventing privacy protections and continuing to track users

The US states of California and Louisiana have filed class action lawsuits against Meta, accusing it of circumventing iOS privacy protections to continue tracking users.

The lawsuits cite a study by researcher and former Google engineer Felix Krause that cited a drop in Meta’s advertising revenue after a 2021 update to Apple’s privacy policy that allowed users to opt out of all tracking on a per-app basis.

One of the actions also mentions Instagram, whose links that consumers click on began to open in an internal browser, which would allegedly record information about the interaction, and even passwords and other personal data.

In addition, the lawsuits point to a lack of data collection warnings and consent from Meta, which admitted to being tracked during Krause’s research.

According to lawyers, the dynamics adopted by Meta have the same mechanism as cybercriminals, who also manipulate websites and online services to collect information, and violate US federal laws, including antitrust regulations and special privacy rules. .

Estimates indicate that the lawsuits could lead to damages ranging from US$100 to US$10,000 per user per day of infringement, as well as the termination of tracking from the Facebook browser and Instagram apps on Apple devices.

Until the court’s decision, experts suggest that consumers copy and paste links found on social networks into their preferred browsers to avoid access being tracked.
