Google Chat is the tech giant’s chat app. Originally part of Google Workspace, it replaced Hangouts as Google’s default messaging app. In this article, you will discover how easy it is to use Google Chat!
If you’re still using Hangouts, you won’t lose any messages by switching to Google Chat. Hangouts users will find Google Chat familiar because it offers all the same features, but adds additional features such as emoji reactions and smart replies.
In addition, Chat also offers a Spaces feature that has valuable tools for group projects. It is available as an app for Android, iOS, browser and desktop. It’s also integrated with Gmail, so you don’t need to download a separate app to use it.
How to set up Google Chat
Setting up Google Chat on mobile devices, browsers and computers is easy. Once you open it, you’ll need to sign in to your Google account to get started. If you’re coming from Hangouts, your conversations will sync automatically.
Set up Google Chat on your mobile phone
If you plan to use Chat on Gmail, you don’t need to install a dedicated app. However, installing the app is useful if you want to keep your email and messaging apps separate.

Set up Google Chat on your computer
To set up Chat on your computer, you must first go to the Google Chat website. Sign in with your Google Account, then click the Install Google Chat button in the top-right corner of Chrome to download the app. After installation, you are ready to use!
Configure Google Chat in Gmail
Regardless of your Gmail platform, you can access Google Chat within seconds of activation. If you plan to use it for desktop and mobile, you’ll need to enable Chat on both platforms.
Gmail application
Open the Gmail app and then tap the menu button in the upper-left corner of the screen.
Scroll down and tap settings. Select your Google Account, then tap Chat to enable Google Chat.
Gmail for PC
- Open Gmail in your browser.
- Press the Settings button in the upper right corner of the screen.
- click inside see all settings.
- Select the Chat & Meeting tab.
- Select the Google Chat radio button.
Now you can use Google Chat on mobile and desktop.
How to send an individual or group message in Google Chat
Open Google Chat. On your desktop or browser, tap the plus button next to the Chat tab. Tap the New Conversation button. Search or select a recipient and that’s it!
To add more people, tap the Add Members button in the upper right corner of the screen.
How to create space in Google Chat
Open Google Chat. On your desktop or browser, tap the plus button next to the Chat tab, then tap the New Chat button. Tap the Create Space button, enter a name, image and description of the space and you’re done!
The title is the only required option, so you can come back later and add an image and description. Search and select the people you want to add to the space. If you want to configure the space before adding someone, you can skip this step.
How to share files in space
- Open space.
- Select the Files tab.
- Tap the Add Files button in the lower right corner of the screen.
- Find and select the file you want to share.
- Tap Send to add the file to the space.
How to use integrations in Google Chat
Integrations is the term for advanced messaging in Google Chat. There are seven types: Photos, Camera, GIF, Meet Link, Calendar Invitation, Drive and Format. You can access these options by tapping the More button to the left of the new message box in Google Chat. On the desktop or in the browser, some of these options are to the right of the message box.
